Your blog doesn't precisely identify who you are (Queen Mary, University of London?), so I'm not sure of your needs. But I wanted to point out that Rhythmyx doesn't really replace Dreamweaver as a web authoring tool - your web designer would probably still create templates in Dreamweaver. But it's true from our experience that once the templates are designed, your staff can create web pages without needing any HTML experience. And I'd certainly agree that Rhythmyx requires "technical experimentation and ongoing communication with the vendors," though it wasn't designed for large universities (which we are).

This sounds very cool and would be great if we could get more people onboard. I'm definitely in!

The problem is not always that the technology isn't available, as it clearly is in this case, but that everyone within the community has to be able to access and want to use it.

The words that jump out at me on the Janet Talk web page? 'Shared whiteboard', am I a geek or what?

I think we do need a change in culture - obviously - but we are not likely to get this unless we have the right tools to use and make it easy for people to participate. Having to remember to look at the blog and the wiki and our email and then not being able to check someone's phone number from within email but having to find the right web address and opening that too and then having to cut and past addresses into the mail box, not being able to view calendars, MSN refusing to 'remember me' because my deskstop is locked down in some way - personally I find all this a real hinderance and I want to join in! If I was feeling left out of the cultural shift I'd probably give in altogether until the tools we provide are better and more seamless.

This looks really good. It looks a lot more userfriendly and has a lot more to give. I would have definitely considered this if it were about a year ago. However, do we need a change in software or a change in culture?

Yes, and they might even enjoy the exploration experience too. Clicking on a tag might return a list of ranked records; it would be nice to be able, say, to slide tags and records into a box to be posted to Facebook, Delicious, whatever, as well.

In my dreams! Wonder what our academics would think of this?

There is something so appealing about the interface that it begs you to browse around and explore new stuff you would never think of listening to normally. If we could translate a smidge of that feeling into the catalogue we might find library users were far more willing to explore collections than we currently think.

Coo, what a good idea! But think about, say, replacing the tabs by 'Libraries', 'Online', 'Other data' (ie repository, other non-library indexed data); the moods by 'research', 'taught'; and the genres by LC main classes.

Not necessarily best examples and you might not get sweet music, but something else might pop up!

Are you suggesting we deliver information content to the students based on what mood they're in? Some suggestions:

No work today,
1 hr to deadline,
all nighter (exam next day)
